xAI sues Grok user for generating nonconsensual sexualized deepfakes

Engadget

The defendant used Grok to create sexualized images of adults and children, xAI says. SpaceXAI (as xAI) has filed a lawsuit against Terry Wayne Harwood, a 67-year-old man from South Carolina whom the company has accused of using Grok to generate sexual images of real people without their consent. In the complaint that xAI filed in Texas, it said that the defendant uploaded non-sexual images of numerous adults and minors to his two xAI accounts from December 8, 2025 until February 18, 2026. He then asked Grok to alter the photos or to create new images and videos depicting the adults and children in them in a pornographic manner or otherwise sexualizing them. The company said that Grok refused to follow his prompts on numerous occasions but that he repeatedly submitted edited prompts to circumvent the AI's safeguards. In one example mentioned in the filing, xAI said Harwood uploaded the photo of a fully dressed girl around 10 to 11 years old and then asked Grok to remove all of her clothing and make her do a Playboy model impression as she laid in bed.

Former employees sue over Meta's alleged use of biased AI systems during layoffs

Engadget

Former employees sue over Meta's alleged use of biased AI systems during layoffs Former employees sue over Meta's alleged use of biased AI systems during layoffs Meta cut its workforce by 10 percent in May. Twenty-six former Meta employees are suing the company for allegedly using biased AI tools that disproportionately selected people who took medical leave as candidates to be laid off, reports . All the plaintiffs in the lawsuit were impacted by Meta's most recent round of layoffs, which cut around 8,000 employees in the hopes of offsetting the company's investments in AI and data center infrastructure. Meta is accused of using a constellation of artificial intelligence systems to select which employees should be cut. It's claimed those included an internal AI assistant called Metamate, employee-trained second brain agents, AI-token usage dashboards and keystroke-and activity-monitoring data.

Three publishers challenge Google over AI copyright infringement

It's the latest in a barrage of efforts to win compensation from AI companies over training materials. Hachette Book Group, Cengage Learning and Elsevier are the plaintiff companies and writer Scott Turow is the individual behind this effort . Yet Google has failed to implement effective guardrails. The literary world has made several attempts to make deals with the AI companies that have scraped and trained large language models off of their protected works. In fact, a group including several of the same parties already have a similar class action suit underway against Meta .

This Luddite Puppet Hopes You're Not Reading This on Your Smartphone

WIRED

Gowanus the media puppet probably shouldn't even be talking to me. Made of literal garbage--his origin story is that he was born in a dumpster in his namesake neighborhood in Brooklyn--he's the media representative for the Summer of Ludd, a Luddite festival that took place in New York earlier this month. The festival, which WIRED attended, included everything from workshops on how to flirt IRL to an evidence box, where people could submit testimonies on how Big Tech has negatively impacted their lives. Its rules were simple: Be present. No phones, recordings, or photographs allowed. So, philosophically speaking, it is somewhat contrary to Gowanus' beliefs to be in a podcast recording studio at Condé Nast's Manhattan offices. But he's pragmatic, telling us he wants to reach people, so he's willing to meet them where they're at. Still, he has some conditions--presented to me on a handwritten contract. Namely, that we not clip short-form video of the show, in an effort to encourage people to engage with the full interview. In a compromise, we agree to only clip Gowanus explaining the contract. You might be wondering why Summer of Ludd and its movement are represented by a puppet. It's a nod to the original Luddites, British textile workers who anonymously organized against being replaced by technology during the Industrial Revolution in the early 19th century. While the term "Luddite" has since become a derogatory way to refer to someone who opposes technology, there's a renaissance happening--and it's surprisingly being heavily embraced by Gen Z. Gowanus offers anonymity to the people behind the growing trend. I was curious about how being a modern-day Luddite works in practical terms--even organizing this interview was a challenge, because the Summer of Ludd folks weren't necessarily quick to reply to emails. And I wanted to know why the first generation to ever grow up totally online seems to be leading the charge on having less screen time.

Engadget

The integration doesn't sit well with everybody -- and Gemini isn't the most popular AI assistant out there -- but you will start seeing an Ask Gemini button with a sparkle icon soon if you're in the United Kingdom and use Google's browser. Gemini's Chrome integration used to be exclusively available to AI Pro or AI Ultra subscribers, but Google made it more widely available in the US on desktop in late 2025. The company then rolled out the feature to Latin America and the Middle East, and then to Canada, India and New Zealand, until it made its way to over 50 countries around the world.

How a 14 accessory saved my AirPods (and my right ear)

PCWorld

When you purchase through links in our articles, we may earn a small commission. I wear my AirPods every day, and these $14 silicone tips completely changed how comfortable they are. I'm something of a fiend when it comes to music. It's the fuel I need to keep going. Not only does it help me generate new ideas for articles, but it also helps keep me in a more relaxed state throughout the day (I'm a naturally anxious, high-energy person).
